“The trick is to say you’re prejudiced against all races.”
It’s not unheard of to joke about creative ways to get out of jury duty, but I’ve actually wanted to be on a jury. It may not have the glamour of being in a Broadway audience, but perhaps the many years of hanging out with lawyers rubbed off on me. So when I was summoned to appear for jury duty this last week, I was kind of excited about it. (Maybe all these years of watching “Law and Order” had something to do with it, too.) Now that I’ve actually sat through a trial and gone through the process, I would advise that if you are asked to serve, don’t try to weasel out of it. It sounds corny, but it is an important civic duty and should be taken seriously. (Although—if you really are that desperate to get out of it, you probably might not be a good juror.)

I was all set for the proclamation of Christmas in Gregorian chant, and the priest was at the lectern ready to deliver the proclamation, when the organist launched into “O Come All Ye Faithful”! I feel so cheated…
But other than that, midnight Mass at Holy Name Cathedral was lovely, as usual. Though I think they should start doing new pieces/arrangements (keep some; “He’s a Pretty Baby” is always a fun piece to listen to).

I’m not normally given over to predictions, but I think this weekend’s going to be busy. Gel and Brent are finally tying the knot, and I have the honor of being a member of the wedding party. Rehearsals on Saturday, formalwear to pick up, a hair cut, breakfast with Gel, photos of the wedding party, the wedding itself, the reception… and I imagine Gel is going to conscript me into photographer duty.
Monday’s going to be…interesting. Though I don’t think anything extraordinary is going to happen, it will be an experiment in seeing just how much I’ve recovered over the past two weeks and what form our relationship is taking.
Also, Movable Type tells me this is my 300th entry. It’s been a wild ride so far–here’s to hoping the excitement continues…

So, I took the plunge and bought myself a Nikon D70. So far, I’m loving it. I’ll be paying for it for awhile, but it’s worth it.
What it means is I finally got around to seriously indulging my photography hobby. (It is the final component of the moving-on process.)
In and about Waukesha County, WI:

A visit to the “otorhinolaryngologist” –> “prescriptions” for “corticosteroids” and “codeine” and a “blood test” to check for “mono” or “tonsillitis.” While the “swelling” has gone down, I still cannot “enjoy” “food,” which “sucks” because lately I’ve had a “craving” for the “fries” at “The O.” It’s just as well, since The O is “ten” “hours” away.
Incidentally…you know that things could be better when you start digging out the old favorites from the iPod. In my case, it’s Rent–that staple from high school days that appealed to many a teenager–and all the baggage that came to be associated with that musical. I’d sing along more passionately if I didn’t have so many things swollen there.

Summer photos.
Also incidentally, I hope to write something about my camping trip (which is now two months past) sometime soon.

Still haven’t quite shaken off the sickness–I have a lingering stuffy nose and, I’m guessing, some sort of infection as I have some swelling going on of the lymph nodes or somesuch. Yes, I should probably go to the doctor at some point.
The past two weeks have been a blur… I don’t know exactly where the time went. I could say that having my life effectively upended has been progressively hitting me in stages, and that I really just need to regroup… I’d like to start by once again having a car to call my own. I’ll be doing some test drives this weekend, and maybe one of them will tickle my fancy. After that, I can work on another ‘pooter and another camera.

A four-day weekend turned into a full-blown week off from work thanks to the onset of flu-like symptoms… but luckily the sickness held off until the end of the holiday weekend.
Friday night (July 2nd) saw another get-together for sushi and anime, with a very special non-GE employee joining the folks for a fine evening filled with nigiri, sashimi, and maki.
Saturday found our heroes in Minooka Park for a dose of mosquito bites and some good ol’ fashioned picnicing before valiantly attempting to rush back to Chicago for the Independence Eve fireworks in Grant Park. However, weather and the Fates conspired to keep them from their appointment with a very fine light show.
Sunday was a beautiful day, the skies sporting a beautiful mix of sun and clouds; the perfect weather to accompany an afternoon spent in the park listening to the Old 97s, They Might Be Giants, and the Counting Crows with some old high school friends. Then it was off to the fountain and a brief stroll along the waterfront before finding a place to await the Navy Pier fireworks show–which got off to a late start but nonetheless did not fail to please.
Monday saw very little–some driving, some tile shopping, dinner at the Grand Lux Cafe, and finally completing an unfinished viewing of “Charade.”
Tuesday was a day for tripping down memory lane. After spending sometime in Montrose Beach near E. coli-infested waters, our heroes basked in the sunlight for a time, imparting one with a painfully red sunburn and leaving the other just a shade darker; then headed to the northwest side to visit our Chicago native’s grade school and then 40 miles into the western suburbs for a trip down high school memory lane and dinner at the Colonial Cafe with the temptation of a Kitchen Sink…
All in all, a good weekend.

So, it’s been awhile. A Bad Thing happened a little over a week ago, and it hasn’t been fully resolved yet. Don’t worry, though, it didn’t involve physical injury. Any negative impact the Bad Thing might have had on my mental health is more than offset by the Good Thing I have going. And the Good Thing is absolutely wonderful.
